Dr. Aida Nazarikhorram, Medical doctor and co-founder of LuxAI has found an innovative way to help families and children with Autism. With QTrobot, an interactive humanoid robot.

QTrobot is an exceptional therapeutic aid that benefits children with Autism. Using innovative solutions for beekeeping

Bees are important to the world. As half of the estimated 81 million beehives around the world loose there colonies each year, innovative solutions to help keep the beehives intact are necessary. Fiona Edwards Murphy, founder of ApisProtect from Cork, Ireland has found those solutions.

ApisProtect uses the internet of things (IoT) and big data to help beekeepers reduce losses and increase productivity in hives. With sensors, machine learning and old-fashioned beekeeping knowledge, ApisProtect helps beekeepers to identify hive problems, diseases and pests.

ApisProtect is inspired by research from academia and Fiona Edwards Murphy has sone her doctoral research into the application of sensors and networking in honey bee hives. Now ApisProtect moves to use the technology in beehives into the commercial sphere, to provide insight for beekeepers to prevent losses and increase productivity.

Fiona Edwards Murphy will represent Ireland during the semi-finals of Ideas from Europe on November 22 in Tallinn. There she will try to convince the jury to send her to the Knight’s Hall in The Hague in April 2018.

The Internet of Crops

Today, after leaving the field, 17% of the world’s food products spoil during storage and transit – a loss that affects families all over the planet, especially in developing countries. The Greek company Centaur has found a way to monitor the world’s harvests to prevent loss and keep what comes to your table free from pests, mold, and excessive chemical use.

Monitoring and analysing crop data is a start, but the real power lies in using it. The software of Centaur will suggest effective treatments to imminent and current crop threats using Cognitive Pest Management tools. Sensors transmit in real-time from any storage container with no required infrastructure.

Sotiris Bantas, CEO of Centaur, creates innovative technology that makes food production safer and ultimately more democratic – proof that creative solutions can help crack tough humanitarian problems. He will represent Centaur and Greece at the semi-finals of Ideas from Europe in Tallinn this November.

Rythm’s Dreem enhances our sleep to enhance our performance

We spend a third of our lives sleeping, yet most people still know relatively little about sleep and its implications for our bodies. With their breakthrough wearable technology that improves deep sleep quality, Hugo Mercier, CEO of Rythm not only studies our sleep behaviour but actively enhance our deep sleep, which improves both cognitive and physical performance throughout the day. Rythm is France’s speaker at Ideas from Europe.

By actively influencing user behaviour, the device goes beyond typical wearables that only monitor and report physical activity, making it the world’s first active wearable. When sleepers exhibit brain activity indicating they are in deep sleep, the headband stimulates sound to enhance the quality of deep sleep. Rythm’s Dreem brings numerous sensors including electroencephalogram (EEG) to monitor and analyze brain electrical activity in real time.

Solar powered benches throughout the city

It’s a beautiful Sunday afternoon and you are sitting on a bench, enjoying the view of the city and decide to take some photos. When you reach to your pocket, it turns out your phone’s battery is at 5%! SEEDiA has created solar powered benches where you can recharge your phone.

The benches from SEEDiA are working as hotspot, powered by solar panels and equipped with USB ports, beacons and a battery. The benches are eco-friendly – they utilize solar energy thus do not emit CO2.

The solar products are made from both steel and wood. They are not prone to vandalism, because the solar panels are covered with safety glass, and weighing over 100kg, they are also thief-proof and can handle all kinds of weather conditions. There are different kinds of models and they are already in use throughout Poland.

Using kinetic energy for safer cities and to power them

A smart way to reduce road accidents in cities and creating new energy to power the same city. The Portuguese company Pavnext has found a way to do both. That is why they were selected to represent Portugal in the semi-finals of Ideas from Europe in Tallinn.

Every year, over one million people die in road accidents. In urban environments, these accidents often occur at pedestrian crossings. Francisco Duarte of PavNext has come up with a solution to reduce those accidents: a device that that slows down vehicles, by absorbing the kinetic energy of the vehicle and reducing its speed. Without any action of the driver.

The energy captured by Pavnext, is then converted in to electricity and can be used to power devices like streetlamps or traffic lights, without new CO2 emissions. And Pavnext also monitors traffic, speed and energy, allowing to manage the electrical consumption of the place in real time, saving energy from the grid and protecting the environment.

Francisco Duarte will present Pavnext’s idea to the jury in the Ideas from Europe semi-finals in Tallinn in November. They will decide if his idea should be on the main stage of Ideas from Europe in the Knight’s Hall in The Hague in April 2018.

Building social skills of students with Mightifier

Anxiety and bullying are the main threats to student well-being, their creativity, teamwork skills and basically their ability to learn. Creating a safe and encouraging learning environment, helps them developing the social skills needed. And Mightifier from Finland helps these students.

Mightifier is a positive peer communication tool with measurable impact for classrooms. It turns students into active good-doers by making them experience how great it feels to do good things to others and make others happy.

“It develops social-emotional learning, which can be seen in better self-esteem and class spirit, decreased anxiety and bullying and in the long run, better learning outcomes,” says Mervi Pänkäläinen, CEO of Mightifier.

Mightifier will represent Finland in the semi-finals of Ideas from Europe in Tallinn. With 25 others they will pitch their idea and try to convince the jury they have to be on the stage in the Knight’s Hall in The Hague in the Netherlands in April 2018.

Austria’s winner helps refugees learn to program

All over Europe, refugees want to be a part of the new society that they are in. On the other hand, businesses are looking for talented and skilled software developers. Refugees{code}, based in Vienna, has found a way to cater to both desires. With training programs for refugees, so that they can become a certified software developer.

Refugees{code} has created a nine month learning program especially for refugees to help them find jobs in the IT-market. The program consists of E-learning courses and a three month practical phase, were they are trained by professionals.

“We want to unlock the potential of new arrivals to programming. The main goal is to find a job, which leads to independence and integration,” said Stefan Rorhmanstorfer in the pitch Refugees{code} gave for the Austrian Social Impact Awards 2017.

The innovative project Refugees{code} will represent Austria at the semi-finals of Ideas from Europe in Tallinn this November. Together with 25 other innovative ideas that take on global challenges, they will try to get a ticket for final of Ideas From Europe, in April 2018 in the Knight’s Hall in the Hague, the Netherlands.

AgiliCity is designing the city of the future

With more and more people leaving rural areas to relocate to the city, a good city planning is pinnacle to deal with migration. AgiliCity from Ljubljana in Slovenia has created a dynamic planning and design tool for urban planners: Modelur. They will share their idea during the semi-finals of Ideas from Europe this November.

Modelur is a parametric urban design software tool, developed to help quickly create conceptual urban massing. It calculates key urban control parameters on the fly (e.g. FAR or required number of parking lots) and delivers important information while the design is still evolving.

AgiliCity was chosen to represent Slovenia at the Ideas from Europe stage. There they will pitch the potential of their idea, in the hope to secure a spot on the Ideas from Europe stage in the Knight’s Hall in The Hague next spring.

Cleaning ballast water with Balmaris

Ballast water is considered as one of the most important contributors of the transportation of invasive alien species (IAS) in aquatic ecosystems. Balmaris has the solution to clean that ballast water. That is why they will represent Croatia during the semi-finals of Ideas from Europe in Tallinn.

Ballast has an unique role in cargo shipping. Damaging effects of the IAS introduced via ballast water are recorded in the seas all over the world, having considerable economic, ecological, and environmental impacts, including the loss of native biological diversity. The costs of such impacts in the world are estimated to exceed 100 billion US$ per year.

Balmaris uses a system to filter ballast water without the use of chemicals and is also applicable in other areas like in waste water treatment, food industry and medicine.

They will pitch their idea to the jury on the Ideas from Europe stage in Tallinn in November, in the hopes that they will be send to the Knight’s Hall in The Hague next spring.
